Casa Gilberto

3 1 1 1

Cosy holiday home in a quiet location in the El Golfo valley with stunning sea views.

The Casa Gilberto is wonderfully quietly situated in the El Golfo valley in the small village Los Llanillos in the middle of a small, wild garden with approx. 500 sqm. In addition to an inviting outdoor sitting area and a sun terrace, there is also a brick barbecue. The approx. 60 square meters large house radiates the original character of Canarian way of life, the thick walls and the rustic wooden ceiling provide for a dignified ambience and for the feeling of security. The kitchen, bedroom and bathroom are on the ground floor. A spiral staircase leads up to the cosy living room with its wooden window sills, typical of the Canarian archipelago, and a red sofa bed (180 x 110 cm) for a third guest. For the cooler days an electric heating is available.

There is a village bar and a bus stop within walking distance. Nearby is the famous and rustic bathing place Charco Azul, a kind of covered bathtub created by nature with its lava effusions. It is not far by car to Arenas Blancas, a fantastic landscape dominated by the rare block lava and to Playa Verodal, a red lava sand beach.

The quiet location and the cosy atmosphere make Casa Gilberto the ideal hideaway for a relaxing holiday for two on El Hierro.

El Hierro

El Hierro

The island of El Hierro is the most western and smallest of the seven Canary Islands. The landscape is varied and unspoilt. Like every island of this archipelago, El Hierro owes its existence to volcanic activity, but is one of the youngest of the seven islands, with about 1.1 million years. The volcanic origin of El Hierro is still clearly visible today, especially the southern part of the island around the coastal village La Restinga offers interesting insights into the geological past.

The year-round mild climate with average temperatures between 15 and 27 degrees Celsius is primarily determined by the north-eastern trade wind. This weather phenomenon is responsible for the fact that on the island El Hierro subtropical climate prevails pleasantly and that also a rich vegetation thrives by the humidity carried along in the trade wind clouds.

In combination with the unique geological structure of the island, there is a variety of vegetation zones, such as pine and laurel forests, fertile fields and pastures, subtropical vegetation and fascinating volcanic areas with endemic succulents. Agriculture can be found in the northwestern part: orchards and vineyards as far as the eye can see.

Another special feature of El Hierros is the starry sky, which is particularly bright due to the clean air. Due to its location in the Atlantic Ocean, the relatively sparse population and the pristine landscape, El Hierro is considered a natural paradise. The highest elevation is the 1501 metre high Malpaso. The official population of the island is approximately 11,000 people spread over a total area of 269 square kilometres. Traditional festivals such as the Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes or the modern Bimbache openART Festival bear witness to the joie de vivre of the Herreños – as the inhabitants of El Hierro are still called.

This unique combination makes the Canary Island of El Hierro, completely untouched by mass tourism, an ideal holiday destination for people who want to rest during their holidays and enjoy nature.

Nature & Outdoor

Nature & OutdoorFrom the northwestern section of El Hierro, there is a particularly spectacular scenic outlook: the Mirador de la Peña. Conceived by the well-known Lanzorote artist César Manrique, it is a true work of art that seamlessly integrates typical island elements, such as natural stone, into the unspoiled surroundings.

On the island’s western side, the “El Sabinar” forest is home to countless juniper trees that have been sculpted by the wind into leaning and crooked stances. This area makes visible the unbelievable adaptability of nature, particularly the juniper tree.

With an elevation 1,500 m above sea level, the Malpaso is the highest mountain on El Hierro. The “Camino de la Virgen” is an absolute must-see that leads hikers over the entire summit and promises an enchanting view.

The sky at night-time is truly breathtaking. One of the best sites for stargazing is the lighthouse at Orchilla. It’s a romantic spot with historical significance, to boot, as it’s the location of the original prime meridian, relocated to the English city of Greenwich in 1885.

Culture & Sports

Culture & SportsThe cultural centre of Guinea, in the Golfo Valley between Las Puntas and La Fronters, is the place to experience the historical development of daily life on El Hierro from 1700 to the 1950s.

Hikers can choose from El Hierro’s assortment of routes of varying difficulty. Whether winding through lava landscapes, fairy-tale forests, or over impressive peaks – no matter what path you hike, you’ll encounter El Hierro’s lovely, native, unspoiled natural life.

The diving spots off of El Hierro are no longer insider secrets! Experience crystal-clear Atlantic waters with a breathtaking, richly coloured, and diverse underwater landscape. If you’re curious about diving, visit the town of “La Restinga,” a conservation area and the site of many fascinating dives.

Cities & Nightlife

Cities & NightlifeWe recommend a stroll through charming, historic “La Frontera” on the island’s northwest. Before you even get to the town you’ll be able to spot its lovely old church, “Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria,” which presides over a hill at its highest point. The panoramic mountain view is absolutely worth a look, too.

“La Calle” is the city centre of the capital Valverde, in the east, and the nexus of activity. Here you’ll find shops, the island’s main church, “Santa María de la Conceptión,” and the central plaza, “Plaza Principal.”

The city is also the site of El Hierro’s largest festival, the “Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes.” It’s a religious celebration celebrated every 4 years in July in honour of the island’s patron saint, and features the ceremonial procession of the patron saint’s statue from its original location on the Dehesa plateau to Valverde’s “Nuestra Senora” church. The procession winds through colourfully decorated streets to the accompaniment of local musicians. It’s a wonderful festival that’s known far beyond the island’s boundaries, one that brings visitors closer to the culture of “Herreros” with merriment and dance.

El Hierro is not known for a particularly lively nightlife, but there are bars in the capital where visitors can certainly while some time away.
